6–19 October: the middle of the month. By 15 October sunset is at 18:01. On Saturday 17 October at 11:00 Salem attempts a world record with Witch Hats on the Wharf. On October weekends Essex Street closes to through traffic, with no on-street parking 9:00–22:00.

20–31 October: Halloween week. The last week is the busiest; the city names 24, 25 and 30 October as the heaviest days. On 31 October sunset is at 17:38, the marketplaces on Derby Square and Salem Common open 10:00–21:45, and the Halloween Night Finale and drone show runs 22:00–22:30. Daylight saving time ends on 1 November.

If you drive, city parking includes the Museum Place Garage at 1 New Liberty Street and the South Harbor Garage; October rates go up and are not published in advance.
